The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), an international organization that aims to ensure food security, designates areas that are in decline due to the effects of globalization, environmental degradation, and population growth, but that are making efforts to preserve and sustainably use traditional agriculture, culture, and landscapes. This project was launched in 2002 with the aim of passing on globally important agricultural regions to the next generation.

The Usa region of the Kunisaki Peninsula is located in the northeastern part of Kyushu, and is made up of four cities, one town, and one village, centered around a round peninsula that juts out at the southern end of the Seto Inland Sea.The terrain is made up of ridges and deep valleys that radiate from the peaks of the Futago mountain range in the center, and the plains are narrow and there are many short, steep rivers.
